WORKSHOPS
One of the objectives of our organization is to provide computer, motivational or technical seminars and workshops. The cost of implementing this objective is not cheap so fund raising activity was organized last December 1996. The cost of some of these courses if facilitated by private company range from $900.00 to $1500.00 per session for a maximum of 25 people.
It was therefore a challenging task for the technical committee to embark
on this project considering that only $900.00 was raised in the December
fundraiser.
After spending many hours of telephone work, we finally found a non-profit
organization called SHARE Family Life Education Program through Coquitam
Continuing Education. They are committed to provide seminars and workshops
designed to fit to the needs of individual businesses and other organizations.
The good news is that they are only charging 25% compared to private companies,
which is within our budget.
Our first workshop entitled "Assertive Communication" will be held on June 21, 1997 at the SHARE training center located at Suite 200, 25 King Edward in Coquitlam. It is at the same building where the Winners Designer is located. (Note: This workshop was originally scheduled for May 24 but has to be changed to accommodate the availability of a facilitator.)
The next upcoming workshop is "Negotiating Fair Deals". This is another interesting workshop geared to any individual, business owner, or professional looking to improve his/her negotiating skills. Tentative date is either in the late summer or early fall.
To take advantage of this free NAMA sponsored Assertive Communication
workshop, please contact Dexter Tarampi, @ 528-8165 or 942-8726. Seating
is limited so it is on a first come first serve basis. Attending members
will be charged $10.00 to pay for lunch at China Kitchen, as the workshop
will be from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
COMPUTER SEMINAR
On May 4, six members attended a Windows 95 course facilitated by one of our colleagues, Arnel Agbulos. The course, which was held at Digno Vibat's residence, covered anything you want to know about Windows 95 including creating folders, shortcuts to useful Tips and Tricks. All of the attendees were satisfied with the presentation and are all interested to attend future computer seminars.
Depending upon the needs of our members, another Windows 95 or an Internet course will be offered in June. All of these seminars are free and seats are limited (maximum of 8) on a first come first serve basis. To register, please contact Dexter Tarampi @ 528-8165 or 942-8726.
As of May 1997, 59 members or 45% have paid their membership fee. We
appreciate your support for the organization and your dues are very important
in
sustaining the activities of our organization. For those who haven't
paid their membership fee yet, please send your payment to the Box. No.

NEW MEMBERS
We wish to welcome two new members who joined our association this period. They are:
GENERAL MEETING
By: Greg Narciso
It had been noted lately that attendance to our general meeting is waning. To determine the factors causing the decrease, the executive committee has decided to phone the general membership. The officers and area coordinators contacted them and 38% of the membership responded.
The survey revealed the following results:
* 68% prepare to meet on Thursday
* 58% would like to meet every month
* 56% like the meeting to be 2 hour long
* 52% prepare to meet in Richmond
Among the comments that were brought up were:
- some members want to see more technical
seminars to be sponsored by the
organization
- NAMA sponsor activities that will involve member's
kids
- give younger Mapuans some responsibilities to
prepare for future leadership
- area coordinators to get in touch with members
in their area to facilitate
in coordinating various activities
more efficiently and to set example in
attending meeetings.
ANNOUNCEMENT
Our meeting will continue to be held at the Centennial Community Centre at 65 E 6th Avenue, New Westminster (beside Canada Games Pool). Our schedule for the coming months is:

SPRING DANCE
Once again our association is having a spring dance on June 7 at Renfrew Park Community Centre on 2929 E. 22nd Ave in Vancouver. As always, Mapuans and friends are invited for a night of dancing and laughter. The proceeds from this fundraiser are earmarked for our annually sponsored camping/picnic. The ticket is for $18.00 and Sounds Unlimitted will provide music. This will be a nice way to gear up for the numerous activities we have lined up for the year. For tickets, please contact your area coordinator or the executive committee members. For more details call Bert Samson at 525-8608.

SUMMER CAMPING TRIP
By: Greg Narciso
As in the past two years, we have scheduled to spend a weekend together
in a campsite. This year we are able to reserve Stave Lake Lodge and campsite
for July 25, 26 and 27. This is an exclusive place owned by B.C. Hydro
and only NAMA members and guests will be allowed on that weekend. This
has been a popular event in the past and we expect to gather bigger crowd
this year.
We encourage members to come especially those who are not able to attend our various social and sports activities. This is an event we try to give more emphasis and subsidized for the general membership to enjoy and appre- ciate. This is family oriented and there will be games, music and lots of fun (golfers-bring your pitching wedge for pitching contest). If you have volleyball net please call Greg Narciso at 581-1275. Entrance will be free to members and family, compliments of NAMA with free brunch on Sunday July 26.
The idea is to make that Sunday a picnic day so those who cannot stay in the campsite for the whole weekend can still come and join the fun. This is a kind of pot lock so every family has to bring their own food to last for the duration of their stay although NAMA will provide additional foods such as hot dogs, corn, fruits chips etc.
