AN AFFAIR WORTH REMEMBERING

NAMABC held its annual "SPRING PARTY" last April 25th at the Delta Pacific Resort Hotel in Richmond.  There were 125 attendees.

The new set of officers was inducted by Hon. Consul General Lourdes Morales of the Philippine Consulate in Vancouver. There were about 30 door prizes raffled.  Save-On-Foods donated 5 bags of rice and 5 baskets of assorted grocery items through the courtesy of Pete Dela Cruz.  A raffle ticket of 3 numbers for 5 dollars was worth trying because the grand prize was a 14" color TV. DJ Lany Cruz provided the music.

The members started arriving at 6 pm and the affair ended at 12 midnight. Amante Jotie performed his humorous emceeing once again to the much delight of everybody.

FREE, FREE, FREE and FREE

Aside from breathing free air, you can also get a free Internet Access at a free library in Vancouver. You need the last 6 digits of a library card and the last 4 digits of the telephone to which the owner of the card has registered. If  you don't have a card, you may get one using a driver's licence or passfort. Once you gained access, go to  http://www.hotmail.com or www.yahoo.com or lycos (etc) and get a free email address. You need this email address to be able to have a free 5 MB disk space for your HomePage or web site.

There are plenty of organizations giving free sites, like, www.geocities.com, www.angelfire.com, www.tripod.com (etc). These companies survive from advertisements you will see popping on your monitor. Get wired by registering your  name on www.alumni.net.

WEB, HTML/PDF TUTORIAL
Last Saturday, May 16th, four NAMABC members met for the second session of tutorial/hands-on on "Web Publishing by HTML/PDF" at Digno Vibat's place. The first session was held last April 18th and it was attended by eight members. The venue was also at the same place. The interactive tutorial was given by Joe Pante and Vic Dalisay and it was well appreciated by the attendees.

Members interested can enroll for the next batch.  Please call Vic Dalisay at 944-4489.  Another tutorial slated is about C/C++/Windows Programming using MS Visual C++.   This topic is needed by Autocad users willing to take advantage of the latest development in Release 14. The future trend is no longer centered on AutoLisp.

This topic is also useful for those interested on Java, the language of the Web. Language compilation on C/C++ is said to be done visually--Visual C++. Call Victor to reserve your seat.  "First come, first served" basis only.

WINDOWS 95 TIPS
by Arnel Agbulos
Here are some helpful tips for all Windows 95 users. Enjoy it!!

When using a clipboard that install with Win95, everytime you paste something new to it, you lose the last thing that was there.

Windows 95 has a ClipBook where you can save clippings for later re-use. To install, put the Windows 95 CD in your CDROM drive and in the resulting window, select Add/Remove Software.

Go to the Windows Setup Tab, click Have Disk, click Browse and move to d:/Other/Clipbook (where d: is your CDROM drive letter). The only file that will be in that directory will be CLIPBOOK.INF file. Double click it. Check ClipBook Viewer and install it.

You will now be able to open the ClipBook through your Start Menu, under the Accessories heading.

To access the Internet quickly, click on the Start button and then go to Run.  At the Run, type in the Internet address such as http://welcome.to/namabc and you will be there in a flash.

If a file is associated with a program, it will launch that program when you double click on it, or right click and select OPEN.  If you want to open the file with a different program, all you want to do is press the shift key.

To clear the Recent Documents from the Start Menu, right click the Task Bar, select Properties, then choose the Start Menu Programs tab. Press the Clear button down to the bottom.

If you don't want to take the time to close all of your applications, simply select Shutdown from your Start Menui and pick the "Close all programs and log on as a different user?" option.  Then log back on as the same user.

To simultaneously close down all the windows you have opened, simply
hold the shift key and click the "X" button on the right side of the folders title bar.

When browsing through your computer,  you can often end up with a screen full of unwanted folders. To close the folder and all its parent folders, just hold down the SHIFT while closing a folder. Try it and you'll wonder how you ever lived without it!!.

To make your computer use Dial-up networking to connect you to the Internet everytime you boot, go into the Dial-up Networking directory in "My Computer". Now click on the file that you usually use to connect to the Internet and drag it to the desktop; it should appear there WITHOUT asking anu questions such as "This file cannot be placed on the Desktop, would you like to create a shortcut instead?" At this point, you should "cut" the file off the Desktop and place it in your Startup Directory in your Start Menu.

Now reboot your PC. It should automatically connect you to the the Internet without the "enter information" box appearing forcing you to click Connect before it continues.

If it does come up with the box, do two things...type in your password and in the appropriated box when it appears on the boot-up and check the box below it that says "save password".  Now you must connect to the Internet once by clicking on the Connect.

The call must go through or else it will not save your password. Now disconnect from that call once you are able to get in.  Go into the Dial-up Networking in My Computer and click ONCE on the icon that you dragged to the Desktop before. Choose "settinghs" from the toolbar at the top of the window stating "Display Information Box".  Now reboot and watch it dial!!

OK folks, I hope the above Windows 95 tips help you in your computing!!!
